Junior Report

It is time to reflect on 2010, another very successful year for the junior section.

Most importantly we continued to provide coaching for about 200 boys and girls between 8 and 15 thus continuing the healthy trend that we have established. This is a great testament to our coaches and management and, of course, especially Ann Burridge. We continue to commit ourselves to being a ‘force for good’ in the community by taking youngsters of all ages and abilities, encouraging them to enjoy their cricket and recognising the value both of fair play and being part of a team.

Our performances on the pitch have continued to demonstrate our ambition to encourage all our youth to enjoy their cricket and to be as good as they can possibly be. The main team successes have been:

  • Our girls have won all their U11 matches and several of the U13s have played regularly for the ladies team, scoring runs and taking wickets. The U9 girls have played with the U9 boys in their matches.
  • The U9’s played their first competitive matches and the U9As won 8 out of 9 of their matches! In August, a team of U9s went on to win the Andover U9 Festival, winning all their matches.
  • Our U11s won the Hampshire U11 Alan Rowe (County) Cup by 4 wickets with over 5 overs to spare and the Oliver Cup.
  • Our U13s reached the final of the County Competition in the MCC Spirit of Cricket U13 National Club Competition losing very narrowly.
  • The U15s were winners of the Winchester Warriors U15A league and our U15Bs were fourth in the U15B League. The U15A's also won the Millard Cup and were District winners of the Hampshire U15 Cup before losing in the County semi-final to a team who reached the last four of the national competition.

Individual congratulations are due to those selected last summer for County and District Squads:

• County U11 squad: Zach Housden and Felix Organ with Felix being captain.
• County U13 squad: Charlie Ayers and Joe Weatherley were members of the team who won the Taunton festival.
• County U14 squad: Harry Foyle . He played in the County Squad who were 3rd in the National Finals at Oakham.
• County Girls U13 squad: Nicole Blaxland.

• District U10: Felix Bussey-Jones, Jacob Fay, Tadgh Patten.
• District U11 : Ollie Dunger, James Thompson.
• District U11 Girls: Rosie Bailey, Issy Gray.
• District U12: Ben Barber, Simon Culmer.
• District U13: James Burgess, Richie Fitzgerald-Barron, Ben Ford, Joe Holland, Charlie Toyne-Sewell.
• District U13: Girls: Ellie Hill, Ellie Horton, Katie Knaggs, Rhian Lynch, Imogen Smith, Caity Smyth, Steph Trueman and Indie Ward.
• District U14: Maxton Cook, Jack Middleton, Jack Stanley.
• District U15: Adam Berryman, Steven Berryman, James Brooke, Jack Culmer, Rob Payne.

We are pleased to record that the girls’ squad continues to grow in strength with a number of our junior girls now playing regularly in senior ladies cricket. We will be looking to increase the U9 and U11 girls’ membership in 2011.

It is especially pleasing to record that some of our juniors have started representing the club at senior level and have performed with distinction. Adam Berryman was top bowler in the club’s Winchester and District evening league side and he and Steven were part of the Tichborne Cup winning side. Senior 50s were recorded by Jack Middleton and Steven Berryman (107 for the 5ths and 96 and 83 for the 4ths).

Much gratitude and appreciation must go, as always to our coaches this season (Alan Watkinson, Raj Naik, James Burridge, John McGregor, Ian Bussey, Andrew Burgess, Jamie Aldridge, Alan Rowe, Andy Ford, Nigel Miller, Dean Osman, Tom McCormick-Cox, Adam Wilkinson, Josh Merluk, Tom Foyle, Simon McCormick-Cox, Matt Smith, Emma Gaunt, Becky Thorne and Nicky Bamforth) and all our managers. We are also pleased to record the newly qualified coaches who will join our team in 2011, Freddie Wilde, Will Tsang, Rob Organ, Richard Osmond and Mo Wahid.

Finally I must record my deepest thanks to John Walker for his sterling work as Child Welfare Officer. He is standing down from his role this year and we truly appreciate his wise counsel and assistance over the years.

Malcolm Berryman.
Junior Chairman.
