St Cross Symondians 277-2 (24)(B Gillings 103*, D McLeish 43, R Gaster 40*)
Ropley II 145-10 (5)( C James 4-24
St Cross Symondians won by 132 runs.

St. Cross 4XI extended their unbeaten streak this season with a comfortable win over a weakened Ropley side. Both Matt Burrows and Ben Gillings continued their fine form with a century opening stand with the latter hitting a superb 103*. Both Danny Mcleish and Rupert Gaster came in with some big shots, both hitting speedy 43 and 40* respectively to leave St. Cross on 277-2 at the end of their innings. In response Ropley never really got going, mainly thanks to an excellent bowling display from Chris James, taking 4-24 off 11 overs leaving Ropley well short at 145 all out.

Week 8 -June 21 2008

St Cross Symondians 217 (24)(M Burrows 44, B Gillings 42, A Stevenson 42*)
Four Marks 158-10 (8)(C James 4-38)
St Cross Symondians won by 59 runs.

An experienced St Cross Symondians 4th XI overcame top-of-the-table Four Marks with an excellent all-round performance. Another robust opening stand between Matt Burrows (44) and Ben Gillings (42) allowed freedom further down the order and the next four batsmen all chipped in to a good total, most notably Andy Stevenson with 42 no.
The visitors failed to lay down the strong base on which their hosts had built their innings. Although the bad ball was punished severely, wickets fell regularly, largely to Chris James whose 4 for 38 ripped the heart out of the Four Marks upper order. Only D Hatherley (55) provided lengthy resistance but when he fell to Mark McGettigan's off spin (3 for 57), the Four Marks chase faltered.

Week 9 - June 29 2008

St Cross Symondians 310-3 (22)( M Hope 151, A Quick 121))
Steep 204-6 (8)(G Gale 60, J Blake 59)
St Cross Symondians won by 106 runs.

On a day when the bat definitely conquered the ball, St Cross Symondian IV XI made full use of the Steep facilities to set a unassailable target for their hosts. Central to this was a stunning 247 partnership between Matt Hope (151) and Andy Quick (121). Hope, who has played in all the Club's teams this season needed a long bat to restore his confidence. After a nervous but focused start from the young batsman, he then proceeded to destroy the Steep bowling with a controlled hitting performance of the highest quality. When joined by the somewhat older Andy Quick with the score at 36, Quick matched the scoring rate of the more aggressive Hope with some elegant leg-sided strikes. Both batsmen stormed passed the hundred mark at a canter with the home side clearly demoralised.
Early wickets for Chris James (3 for 34) seemed to set up an easy maximum points haul for St Cross, but Blake (59) and Dale (60) set about chasing down batting points and the game soon became about achieving a 200 target rather than a win. St Cross had to wait until the 36th over before the fourth wicket fell to the bowling of Rupert Gaster whose late burst of 3 for 21 grabbed late points.

Week 10 - July 5 2008

St Cross Symondians 200-8 (24)( M Burrows 65, R Gatser 45)
Sherfield on Lodden 115-10 (7)
St Cross Symondians won by 85 runs.

St Cross Symondians IV XI's apparent comprehensive victory over a well-equipped Sherfield side had moments of concern for the top-of-the-table Winchester outfit. St Cross's 200 was built around a fine 65 from 16 year old Matt Burrows who has now passed 300 runs for the season. He was helped by Andy Quick (39) and Rupert Gaster (45) and a late surge from Josh Murluk (21).

With small boundaries and a fast outfield, defending this total against two settled batsmen was going to be challenging and the upper order of the Sherfield team showed signs of doing just that. However, the introduction on Rupert Gaster (3 for 19) took a heavy toll and effectively took the game away from the visitors. When off spinner Mark McGettigan (3 for 17) joined the attack in tandem with Chris James (2 for 21), the lower order fell away.

Week 11 - July 12 2008

Flamingo 163-8 (21)
St Cross Symondians 141-9 (8)(A Fidgen 62)
St Cross Symondians lost by 22 runs.

Flamingos inflicted a well deserved first defeat of the season on promotion hopefuls St Cross. The critical phase was a third wicket partnership of 102 between  Mike Foster (40) and Tom Egerton (65) who knuckled down in the difficult conditions with Egerton in particular punishing the all-too-regular short ball. Having built a strong base Flamingos failed to capitailise as St Cross were able to reign the scoring rate in with Josh Murluk (4 for 27) being central in the closing stages.
With both St Cross's openers unusually going early, Alex Fidgeon (62) and Simon McCormick Cox (26) recovered the situation, but at some cost to the scoring rate. With the weather closing in, St Cross realised their dillemma and tried urgently to pull up to the required rate, but lost important wickets in the process with Mike Yarney (4 for 42) doing the damage. Persistant rainfall brought the game to a premature close at 39 overs, with St Cross requiring 23 runs with the last pair at the wicket.

Week 12 - July 19 2008

St Cross Symondians 250-4 (21)( M Burrows 88, S McCormick-Cox 61, A Fidgen 46)
Alton IV 200-5 (9)
St Cross Symondians won by 50 runs.

After coming off the rails the previous week, St Cross 4th XI continued their assault on the North East II championship. Both sides were filled with youthful talent and it was 16 year old Matt Burrows who top scored in the St Cross innings with a faultless 88. He did this in two century partnerships, initially with the classy Alex Fidgeon (46) and then with the even-younger Simon McCormick Cox who took the game to Alton with an aggressive 61.

Alton replied initially in the strongest of terms with an opening century stand between two of Alton's young stars Austin and Beale whose left hand / right hand combination unsetlted the St Cross bowlers. The introduction of Will Bebb (4 for 33), making his 4th XI debut, was a turning point as his flat dart-like left arm spin put the by-now-rampant Alton openers into defensive mode. With the 250 target now out of sight, Alton set about achieving maximum batting points, which they did with two balls to spare.

Week 13 - July 26 2008

Oakley II 170-6 (7)
St Cross Symondians 172-5 (22)
St Cross Symondians won by 5 wkts.

Oakley II, rooted to the bottom of North East Div II, put up a good fight against a powerful St Cross Symondians unit, but in the end, the second-placed side were able to ease past their opponents with some comfort.

Key to Oakley's testing 170 score was a fighting 50 from S Spalding in conjunction with Beckell (24) and Hodgson (36 no). Most successful bowler for St Cross was Alan Watkinson with 3 for 38 from 12 overs.

On a pitch giving the bowlers constant encouragement, the watchfull upper order set about their task with the experienced Andy Quick (73) orchestrating the pace of the St Cross response. He and Simon McCormick-Cox (28) took the the game to a position where the visitors could be the only winners before both perished in the closing overs. Any last hope for Oakley was erased when, with two new batsmen at the crease, Rupert Gaster crashed three consecutive fours to bring home the victory.

Week 14 - August 2 2008

AWE Tadley II 215-10 (8)
St Cross Symondians 217-3 (24)
St Cross Symondians won by 7 wkts.

St Cross Symondians IV maintained their drive towards promotion from North East Division II beating lowly placed AWE Tadley II, who had taken the opportunity of the cancellation of their first team game to strengthen their side, by seven wickets.

After being inserted Tadley approached their innings in 20/20 mode lead by R. Quadrie 52 and M. Stead 31 reaching 132 for 6 off only 20 overs before falling to 166 for 9.  A. Hazelwood and O. Kiane 25 produced a sting in the tail adding 49 for the last wicket as Tadley closed on 215.  For St Cross Mark McGettigan 3 for 41 and Chris James 3 for 60 were the leading wicket takers.

In reply Ben Gillings and Matt Burrows with a cultured 45 gave St Cross a great start with an opening partnership of 102 before Jon Player joined Gillings adding 70 in 11 overs as Player took the game to Tadley with a powerful 40.  Gillings saw St Cross home having batted throughout the innings for a high class 76 not out with 2 overs to spare.

Week 16 - August 16 2008

Liss 142-10 (7) (S Wyatt 62, M McGettigan 7-27)
St Cross Symondians 145-6 (23) (D McLeish 89)
St Cross Symondians won by 4 wkts.

A severely weakened St Cross Symondians IV maintained their grip on second place in North East Division II with a four wicket defeat of lowly placed Liss II.

With the possibility of poor weather St Cross IV inserted Liss II and made the worst possible start by dropping both openers in the first four overs. S. Wyatt 62 and I. Brownlee 38 took full advantage of St Cross's largesse by adding 83 for the first wicket before Mark McGettigan held a fine catch to dismiss Brownlee. McGettigan himself now embarked on a magnificent spell of off spin bowling to destroy the Liss innings single handed as he finished with a personal best of 7 for 27 aided by three fine stumpings by Adam Wilkinson. The last ninewickets added only 59 runs as Liss closed on 142.

In reply St Cross lost three quick wickets before Dan McLeish and Mark Cranley came together to rescue St Cross with a partnership of
120. After a careful start McLeish displayed all his power making 83 which included eight sixes before leaving it to Cranley 37 not out to ensure victory by four wickets. S. Blanks finished with 4 for 46.

Week 17 - August 23 2008

St Cross Symondians 185-8 (7)
Basingstoke & North Hants 186-2 (23) (J Bennett 88*, G Goddard 59*)
St Cross Symondians lost by 8 wkts.

Despite having been in one of the two promotion positions for the majority of the season, this heavy loss to fourth placed Basingstoke means that only a good win next week will guarantee progression for the South East Div II team.

The normally rampant St Cross batsmen had struggled with the conditions and accurate bowling with the exception of Ben Gillings (34), whose crease occupation gave the visitors a solid base. Adam Wilkinson (33) and Mark Cranley (29) pushed the scoring on and a final flourish from Mark McGettigan (15 no) took the score to a testing 185.

Although St Cross had some early success with the visitors at 40 for 2, that was the last wicket to fall as Bennett (88 no) and Goddard (59 no) played with a mixture of power and common sense to see the home side through with a comfortable number of balls still available.

Week 18 - August 30 2008

St Cross Symondians 184-9 (22) (D NcLeish 59, M Burrows 47)
Old Basing II 166-9 (9)
St Cross Symondians won by 18 runs

Despite starting the day in second position and fairly comprehensively beating their opponents, St Cross had the agony of seeing their long-anticipated promotion slip through their fingers as Tichborne Park achieved an additional two bonus points and made the cut by a meagre 0.0292 points.

St Cross appeared to  be well on their way to their first target of 200 runs when Danny McLeish was cutting loose with a powerful 59, supported by the reliable skills of 16-year-old Matt Burrows (47) who passed 500 runs for the season during this innings. At 100 for 1 at the half way mark it was then dissappointing to reach only 184, but this was down to some accurate bowling from Woods (3 for 49) and M Donaldson (1-16) who stemmed the scoring rate. Skipper Malcolm Curtis (5 for 40) then did the real damage with an accurate second spell in which he accounted for four of the increasingly frantic St Cross middle order and beyond. A bright last wicket partnership between James Player and Chris James, pushed the home side over the 175 mark.

Old Basing showed real intent in chasing down the total, using their more experienced players to take advantage anything off target. However, Chris James (2 for 39) and Alan Watkinson (2 for 39) pulled the rate back, leaving Old Basing with a rapidly rising run rate target. Josh Murluk returned with an excellent second spell in which he took four Old Basing wickets and St Cross seemed destined to dismiss their visitors, but they were unable to achieve this and the cost of not doing so was very high.
