Defeat on the last
ball
Losing by one wicket on the last ball of the
match makes for a nerve-jangling finish, and
that was the case for St Cross 5s when they
visited Crown Taverners in the Hants Cricket
League.
The Cross made a solid 211 for 7 with Mark
Cranley top scoring on 73 and Simon
McCormick-Cox making a patient 40 at the start.
In reply, Taverners were 125 for 5 with only 10
overs to go and the Cross were well in control.
But Mike Leach decided to go for broke and
smashed five shots in a row over the ropes to
take it to the wire.
Steve Ryall (2–53) and Will Bebb (3-35) worked
through more wickets, supported by excellent
team work from St Cross, but the Taverners
scraped home with a single at the last possible
chance.

St

Liss III 104-7 (5)
St Cross Symondians won by 236 runs.

Two tons and a
victory
Two
magnificent maiden centuries for St Cross 5s
secured a well deserved victory in the NE Hants
Regional 3 Match away to Liss 3rds. Danny
McLeish (136) and Will Bebb (108 not out) helped
the Cross to a commanding 340 for 4 in 42 overs
of stylish power play.
Support came from Colin Smith (36*) and Nick
Ellerby (33) as St Cross posted a record score
for the 5th team in recent years. McLeish
clubbed 18 boundaries, nine of which cleared the
ropes. Bebb’s unbeaten total included no fewer
than five 6s and ten 4s.
Liss
fought hard with the ball and then resisted with
the bat but were no match for the visitors.
Only C Huntley with 2 for 56 prevented more runs
from St Cross and N Brown with 52 not out stood
in the way of a clean sweep by St Cross.
St
Cross bowlers shared the wickets again as Liss
dug in, with a wicket apiece for AJ McLeish,
Hamish Adamson (1 for 3 from 5 overs), Matt
Smith and Simon McCormick-Cox, plus two for 30
from the irrepressible Will Bebb, as St Cross
won by 236 runs. |

Week 6 - June 7

St Cross Symondians
117-10 (5)(S Oliphant 47)
RNA Sports 120-5 (22)
RNA Sports won by 5 wickets.

Bowlers day
at St Cross
The wicket
was the real winner as St Cross 5s lost
out to top of the table RNA Sports at
the King George 5th ground. Runs were
hard to come by after the Cross won the
toss and elected to bat in the Regional
Division 3 NE match.
Just 117 was
the result of 42 overs of graft in the
face of tight bowling and a wicket that
was low and slow. Steve Oliphant top
scored with a patient 47 from 30 overs
whilst RNA’s S Kerr took 6 for 36 to
restrict the home batsmen.
RNA found
it just as difficult as the St Cross
bowlers kept good line and length and
the fielders attacked everything going.
Two great catches by Mark McGettigan,
and another by Nick Ellerby supported
the bowlers who kept the visitors
batting for more than 33 overs.
Mike Glogg
picked up 3 for 34 on his return to
cricket this season. Steve Ryall
deserved more than his 1 for 35 from 10
good overs, and Matt Smith (1 for 6 from
4) got the best average of the day, but
the visitors took the winning points
home. |

Week 7 - June 14
2008
Aldershot 172-9 (6)
St Cross Symondians 173-3 (23(N Ellerby 75)
St Cross Symondians won by 7 wickets.

Week 8 -June 21
2008
St Cross Symondians
216-6 (9)(M Knight 61, N Ellerby 73)
Tadley Hobos 217-4 (22)
Tadley Hobos won by 6 wickets.
Overnight rain and overcast
conditions gave extra significance to the coin
toss on Saturday. Tadley won it and gleefully
asked the home side to bat through the grey
drizzle of the mid-afternoon. St. Cross made a
solid start however with Matt Knight 61 and Nick
Ellerby 73 putting on 150 for the first wicket.
Will Bebb chipped in with 25 and St Cross
finished on 216 for 7 from their 42 overs.
Smith and Guyan were the pick of the Tadley
attack with 3 for 38 and 2 for 51 respectively.
In reply Tadley got off to a
flying start due to some wayward bowling on a
slow pitch. The visitors always looked to be on
top of the run rate and this meant St. Cross had
to bowl Tadley out to win the game. Canny slow
left armer Will Bebb picked up the Tadley top
three for 57 runs and Matt Smith bowled some
tight lines but none of the other bowlers could
claim the victims that St. Cross needed for
victory. R. Diamond made a powerful 47 for
Tadley who ran out comfortable winners in the 40th
over.

Week 9 -June 28
2008
St Cross Symondians
180-10 (23)(W Bebb 76)
Compton & Chandlers Ford III 175-10 (11)
St Cross Symondians won by 5 runs.
St. Cross elected to bat first
and after losing an early wicket enjoyed some
good fortune as catches consistently flew just
past the C&CF fielders. Nick Ellerby
contributed 32, Will Bebb made an imperious 76
and Chris Anderson 26. After Bebb’s dismissal
however, the St. Cross tail offered little
resistance. C Murkitt returned figures of 3-31
and all the other C&CF bowlers claimed victims,
reducing St. Cross to 180 all out in the 41st
over.
C&CF lost an early wicket but
Andy Murkitt 35 and Tom Haigh 39 steadied the
ship and at drinks looked to be in complete
control. St. Cross then dug deep and through
the tight bowling of Chris Anderson and Will
Bebb 3 for 46 strangled C&CF who made just 18
runs from the following 10 overs. It was then
squeaky bum time. A shaky C&CF required 35 from
the last 7 overs with 5 wickets in hand. Tim
Player (4-31) used all his experience taking 3
for 13 off 3, Nick Ellerby’s heroics in the deep
saw him take 4 catches and young Tim Bailey
(2-12) stepped up as C&CF 3s crumbled to 175
all out, 6 runs short of their target

Week 10 -July 5
2008
St Cross Symondians
280-4 (24)(S McCormick-Cox 109, N Ellerby 70)
Liphook & Ripsley IV 88-10 (3)
St Cross Symondians won by 192 runs.
Acting skipper Pete Wood won the
toss and chose to bat in blustery conditions on
the exposed King George V track at Bar End. Dan
McLeish hit two early sixes but was then undone
by some wind-assisted sideways movement. Young
Simon McCormick Cox sauntered in at number 3 and
together with Nick Ellerby (70) put on 149 for
the 2nd wicket. St. Cross steadily
amassed a commanding total of 280 helped out by
some inconsistent Liphook bowling. McCormick
Cox was finally caught on 109 with Mark Cranley
25 and Will Bebb 32 n.o. in supporting roles.
The thick masses of rain cloud
were beginning to draw ever near and by tea time
the home side realised they may not have the
full 42 overs to win the game. St Cross went
about their task with vigour and professionalism
claiming a steady succession of Liphook
victims. The away side capitulated as Tim
Player (2-21) bowled with his usual consistency
and ‘spin-twins’ Will Bebb (4-4) and Chris
Anderson (3-20) wrapped things up just before
the heavens opened.
Note: Points and
individual performances from this match will not
count in end of season averages as Liphook &
Ripsley IV have since withdrawn from the league

Week 11 -July 12

Littleton & West Hill II 205-5 (23)
St Cross Symondians
171-8 (7)(W Bebb 66)
St
Cross Symondians lost by 17 runs.

Week 12 -July 19
2008
St Cross Symondians
224-8 (24)(T McCormick-Cox 52)
Silchester 208-10 (3)
St Cross Symondians won by 16 runs.
A powerful 52 from Tom McCormick-Cox and 46 from
Matt Knight gave St Cross a solid start in their
RD3 NE match with Silchester. 26 from Ed
Green, and 44 not out from Charlie Wallis in a
great partnership with Will Tsang, gave St Cross
a competitive total and maximum batting points.
Pete Wood ran out of luck after he and Charlie
Wallis had run 27 in three overs.
When Silchester opened their innings, they
hadn’t reckoned on their top three being clean
bowled by Scott Sanders, as he captured 4 for 28
by the end of the match. The home team kept up
with the scoring rate through Jordan (77) and
Minife (36) but both perished whilst St Cross
maintained the pressure. Jordan was cut short
by Charlie Wallis taking a brilliant diving
catch near the boundary, as Robert Ceiriog-Hughes
took his first wicket for the 5s.
St Cross secured
maximum points from the match as good fielding
and persistent bowling by Mark McGettigan, Tom
McCormick-Cox, Charlie Wallis and Tim Player
paid dividends and destroyed the home team’s
ambitions.

Week 13 -July 26
2008
St Cross Symondians
287-4 (24)(T Adams 117*, T McCormick-Cox 77)
Bentworth 147-10 (6)
St Cross Symondians won by 140 runs.
A well crafted 77 from Tom McCormick-Cox and a
commanding 117 not out from Tom Adams set the
scene for a famous victory by St Cross
Symondians 5s in their RD3 NE match with
Bentworth. Previously undefeated, Bentworth
hoped to add to their tally, but the St Cross
batsmen had other ideas as Danny McLeish added
31 and Matt Knight (23) helped compile 287 for
4.
Facing a big challenge, the visitors suffered
two huge blows and found themselves two wickets
down with no runs on the board. Hamish Adamson
shot two golden ducks, clean bowled with his
first two deliveries! Scott Sanders made the
batsmen more worried as he captured the third
wicket with just 18 on the board.
After that, the visitors never recovered, hemmed
in by tight bowling from McGettigan, Ceiriog-Hughes
and McCormick-Cox. But the killer blow came
from Mark Cranley who grabbed an unbelievable 4
for 8 from four tidy overs, aided by superb
fielding and two great catches by Mark
McGettigan.

Week 14 - August 2
2008
St Cross Symondians
143-10 (7)
Whitchurch II 147-17 (22)
St Cross Symondians lost by 3 wkts.
Four St Cross batters got good twenties as they
struggled to overcome a really slow wicket at
King George V when the Winchester team played
Whitchurch in their RD3 North East match.
Ellerby, Green and Anderson worked hard as did
top scorer Alex Smith (32) but none could go on
to get a big score as the Whitchurch bowlers
controlled events. S Ralph captured 5 for 20,
and a quickfire 13 from Hamish Adamson added a
final flourish to the St Cross total.
When the visitors batted they found it just as
tough, and only two reached double figures as
the home team worked through the wickets. S
Dunesby (36) and R Paine (35) made slow progress
against the usual competitive St Cross bowling.
Two wickets apiece for Hamish Adamson, Nick
Ellerby and Chris Anderson, and one wicket for
Matt Smith kept the Whitchurch reply in check
but they couldn’t prevent the visitors taking
home the winning points.

FarnhamI 30-10 (1)
St Cross Symondians
34-1 (23)
St Cross Symondians won by 9 wkts.
Another tremendous opening spell by the St Cross
bowlers saw Farnham reduced to 3 for 3 in their
Regional Division 3 North East match. Scott
Sanders blasted three of the top four bats
before they knew what had hit them, aided by the
usual tight bowling from Tim Player.
Then Matt Smith came on the scene with a great
spell of controlled swing bowling and the
Farnham bats couldn’t cope. Smith smashed 5
wickets for 7, whilst Sanders grabbed 4 for 5,
ably supported by the ever reliable Player and
Mike Glogg who finished with 1 for 7. This
mayhem left Farnham gasping for air as extras
top scored with 9 and the team were skittled for
just 30.
Top class bowling was well supported by great
fielding from Ed Player (two catches off Matt
Smith’s bowling), and a catch apiece for Ed
Wylde (playing his first match for the 5s), Matt
Smith taking a skyer, and Pete Wood coolly
clutching a laser fast slip catch from Sanders.
Then St Cross knocked off the required runs in
just 4.4 overs! Chris Anderson top scored with
19 not out, supported by Ed Player and Matt
Knight. With 23 points, the 5s secured their
place in the top half of the table with two
matches to play.

Froxfield 296-4 (11) (M Hall 131*, N Barrett 56)
St Cross Symondians
109-7 (23)
St Cross Symondians lost by 185 runs.
At least 12 dropped catches made a big
difference to the match between St Cross 5s and
Froxfield with St Cross being the biggest
culprits. The Winchester team put down at least
eight good chances, allowing Froxfield to get
296 and dominate the match.
Top scorer for Froxfield was M Hall with 131*
supported by N Barnett (56). A short boundary
helped the Froxfield batsmen score sixes where 2
or 3 runs would be the norm. Determined bowling
brought wickets for Glogg (2-41), Tim Player and
Pete Wood.
Matt Knight (18) got St Cross off to a good
start, but then the Froxfield players dropped at
least another four catches to allow the Cross
off the hook. Having been 60 for 5 at one
stage, St Cross recovered thanks to Sujith
Silva, Harry Foyle, Mike Glogg and top scorer
Matt Smith with 20 not out.
