Cavaliers 2009
Season Season Review
For the
Cavaliers, the 2009 season was good fun but
often challenging and sometimes even
successful! Four wins is good news, and these
were well won, mostly by narrow margins
following a good team performance. But the team
had to work hard in every match because we were
generally less strong than much of the
opposition.
Congratulations
to Hamish Adamson for claiming the top bowling
spot and to James – Jammy – Jenkins for
returning to cricket and leading the batting on
many occasions. Another welcome arrival was
Kyle Clayton whose enthusiasm and energy was
just brilliant!
New players for
the Cavaliers this season included Steven
Berryman, James Brooke and Alec New, all of whom
worked hard and very successfully for the team.
Alec’s contribution behind the stumps was
tremendous, especially when coping with a few
wayward deliveries! Steven did very well with
bat and ball, and Brookie was also a great asset
to the team.
In all, the
Cavaliers fielded 32 new players this
season - a majority of the 52 who were selected
this year, 37 of whom bowled for the team!
These are impressive numbers for any squad, but
this also indicates how the team membership was
different each week and how challenging it was
to introduce new players in each match. Only
six of the whole squad played in 7 or more
matches!
So, it is almost
unfair to mention the contribution of the many
new players, but I want to offer special thanks
and congratulations to Rob Irving, Will Tsang,
Freddie Wilde, Craig Broomfield, Matt Smith and
Clive Mansell, for their excellent performances
and / or their consistent contribution to the
team this season. And a big welcome to Tamsin
who joined us to keep the scores for the second
half of the season….the records improved hugely
from then on!
And to the many
others who contributed to successes this season,
including Ed Player (his infectious enthusiasm
and brilliant fielding), Adam Berryman (his
superbly consistent bowling), Robert Payne (who
didn’t play for us often enough!), Nicki
Bamforth (who took her first wicket for the
Cavaliers), Rob Holmes (whose 7 wickets often
broke tricky partnerships) and Rhodri Adamson
who took some wickets (4-4), scored some runs
(36) and then was promptly promoted to the 3s!
And as for the
team? We played 14, won 4, lost 10, and at the
end of the season we were safe from the
possibility of relegation by finishing 14th
in the Hampshire Cricket League, Regional
Division Three North East. So, for the
Cavaliers, having a difficult and demanding
season, the final result was a credit to
everyone who played for the team this year.
Allow me to
reflect on a few important aspects of this past
season, in comparison to 2008. This year the
Cavaliers squad was significantly weaker than in
2008: on only two occasions did we have players
who had also played for the 4s or 3s
(compared to 2 or 3 players nearly every match
in 2008). We were not the only team in the Club
to struggle this year: so did the 1s, 2s, 4s,
and the Buccaneers. This season, only 4
Cavaliers scored more than 100 runs in total.
Last year there were 10 centurions, of whom 2
compiled more than 300. So, along with many
other teams in the Club, we were not as strong
this year. But success goes in waves as we
often observe, so I’m expecting great things
from the Cavaliers in 2010!
And finally, my
personal thanks to our vice captain Russ Herd,
for everything! ……..including his good humour
(not only taking the mickey, etc), hard work
(especially behind the stumps), telling the
players (and sometimes me) what to do, amazingly
successful bowling (4 wickets at an average of
10.5), good judgement (team selection, bowling
changes and batting orders, etc), and taking
some great catches to win matches. Thanks Russ
and everyone. It was a lot of fun!
